Telecom Data Mining

Telecom Data Nugget: The telecommunications industry revenue reached its plateau and stays at the 2000 level. The only sector that is growing is wireless.  Toll service revenues drop. Customer's monthly bill stayed almost the same.

Note:  Detail may not add to totals due to rounding.

Data include revenues for de minimis  filers as well as for other carriers that are exempt from universal service contribution requirements.

2 Carrier's carrier revenues are reported on the FCC Form 499-A as sales to other universal service contributors for resale.  This includes, for example, access services that local exchange carriers provide to toll carriers.  Sales to de minimis  resellers, end-user customers, governments, non-profits, and any other non-contributors are treated as end-user revenues.  Filers contribute to the universal service funding mechanisms based on their end-user revenues.

3 Payphone revenues are included with local service revenues in this table.

4 Revenues from calls that both originate and terminate in foreign points are reported as end-user revenues, and are included in this table, but are not included in the universal service contribution base.

5 Preliminary 2004 data are based on FCC Form 499-Q quarterly filings.  Companies that do not contribute to universal service are not required to make these filings.  The quarterly filings include preliminary data for the just-closed quarter and projections for the coming quarter, and therefore are not as accurate as the subsequent annual filings.  Also, FCC Form 499-Q filers do not separate revenues by type of service.  Therefore, revenue totals by service type for 2004 are based on type of filer rather than on  data filed by type of service.

Note: Average monthly household expenditures are estimates based on sample data.  All households in the sample have wireline telephone service.  Households in Alaska and Hawaii are excluded from the analysis.  No effort was made to distinguish bundled prices from a la carte prices.  For households taking bundled local and long distance from the same provider, the entire bill is generally considered local.
